See the words, even when you can't hear them.

MouthRead is an early-stage phone app that tries to turn a short, close-up video of someone's lips into words. We're building it now, carefully and honestly.

Who MouthRead is for

  • Deaf and hard of hearing people

Caption apps need clear sound. MouthRead aims to help when there's little or no audio to work with.

  • People in loud places

Bars, job sites, concerts and airports, where voices get drowned out but lips can still be seen.

  • Patients who can't speak

After throat surgery, with a trach, or on a breathing tube. They can still move their lips, but no one can hear them.

How it will work

  1. Hold your phone up to a face, or film your own mouth, for a few seconds.
  2. MouthRead looks at the shape and movement of the lips.
  3. It shows its best guesses for the words, so you can pick the right one.

For patients, we're starting with a short list of everyday phrases, like "I'm in pain," "water," and "call my family," because picking from a short list is far more reliable.

Our honest promise

Lip reading is hard, for people and for computers. Many sounds look the same on the lips, like "p," "b," and "m."

MouthRead is still in development. It won't catch every word, and it is not a replacement for interpreters, captions, or medical advice. We'll share real test results before we ask anyone to rely on it.
